For medical students in Ireland: intern year, the UK and a daily habit

Irish medical graduates finish with a one-year intern year, and many look at the UK as well. Here is what is fixed, what changed in 2026, and where WardRun fits.

The intern year

Intern posts are recruited nationally by the HSE, with applications opening each October for posts that start the following July. There are 915 posts across six intern training networks, and each intern spends at least three months in medicine and three in surgery. The Medical Council issues the certificate of experience at the end.

If you are considering the UK

The UK's Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 sets an order for Foundation Programme places: UK medical graduates first, then a priority group that includes graduates of medical schools in Ireland, then everyone else. Irish citizens are also among those prioritised for 2026 specialty training offers.

WardRun is a free daily run of single best answer questions mapped to the UK's 2026 UKMLA content map, with the key point after every answer and a ranking against everyone who played. It suits Irish students who want a daily habit, and anyone heading for UK practice.
